The High Country of North Carolina, encompasses seven counties - Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey - and includes the town of Boone, headquarters of High Country Taxi. Boone is named after the great American pioneer Daniel Boone and is home to Appalachian State University. Founded in 1899, "App State" is constituent institution of the University of North Carolina system, fulfilling the core academic missions of teaching, scholarship, and service honoring the geography and heritage of the Appalachian Mountain region.
